Zusammenfassung:
The article deals with the role of women as spectators in the German National Assembly in 1848/49. Although the representatives allowed the participation of the women and even established a women's gallery, their role as spectators was hotly debated among the public. On the one hand, their admission underscored the Assembly's claim to speak for all German people. On the other, people wanted to prevent a transgression of traditional gender roles, which conceived of politics as a male concern. Thus, many observers of the National Assembly described the female spectators as unpolitical and superficial. Additionally, satire caricatured female interest in the parliamentary debates. The article shows that the revolution opened up space for new gender roles while at the same time enforcing new limits on them.
